The 12-Week PSLE Chinese Oral Countdown Plan: 10 Minutes a Day
A twelve-week countdown plan for PSLE Chinese Oral. Ten minutes a day, three phases — foundation, active practice, exam simulation — with a Monday-to-Friday routine that works for parents who don't speak Chinese themselves.
Twelve weeks, ten minutes a day
The PSLE Chinese Oral exam is expected on 12–13 August 2026 (SEAB 2026 timetable — always double-check on seab.gov.sg closer to the date). This plan starts in mid-May and runs for twelve weeks. Each day needs just 10–15 minutes. Consistency matters vastly more than duration.
Twenty minutes every day will produce dramatically better results than a two-hour session once a week. Speaking is a motor skill and improves only with repetition.
The daily 10-minute routine
Rotate through these five activities, one per weekday. You do not need to speak Chinese yourself — the parent column tells you exactly what to do.
| Day | Activity | What the parent does |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Read aloud a passage from the school textbook or zbschools.sg. | Press record on your phone. Listen to the playback with your child. You don't need to understand Chinese — listen for smooth flow versus choppy reading. |
| Tue | Vocabulary drill — eight words from one of the six themes. | Hold the list. Your child says each word and uses it in a sentence. Check pronunciation against Pleco or Google Translate. |
| Wed | Answer one question — use a past-year prompt. | Time the answer. If it is under 30 seconds, prompt in English: “Can you give an example?” or “Why do you think so?” |
| Thu | 多音字 quiz — test 5 characters. | Show the character embedded in a sentence. Check the pronunciation matches the reference table. Circle mistakes for next week. |
| Fri | Free conversation — any current event or topic from the week. | Record on your phone. Even without understanding Chinese, you can assess confidence, length, and fluency. |
Phase 1: Foundation — Weeks 12–9 (mid-May to mid-June)
In Phase 1 the goal is to build the framework habit and introduce the first three high-probability themes. Don't chase completion — chase repetition.
| Wk | Focus | Daily (10 min) | Weekend (15–20 min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | Learn the P.E.E.L. framework | Read aloud daily; memorise the four steps | Watch one Chinese video; practise describing it |
| 11 | Theme 1: Environment | Eight vocab words; one Q&A using P.E.E.L. | Full mock Q&A on environment |
| 10 | Theme 2: Technology | Eight vocab words; one Q&A | Full mock Q&A on technology |
| 9 | Theme 3: Community | Eight vocab words; start 多音字 drills (5/day) | Full mock Q&A; review 多音字 mistakes |
Phase 2: Active practice — Weeks 8–5 (mid-June to mid-July)
Phase 2 finishes the remaining themes, introduces rapid topic-switching, and begins full-length timed mock orals.
| Wk | Focus | Daily (10 min) | Weekend (15–20 min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Themes 4 & 5: Health, Family | Two vocab sets; practise Q2 (experience) format | Two full mock Q&As |
| 7 | Theme 6: SG Culture | Vocab set; practise Q3 (你同意吗) format | Two full mock Q&As |
| 6 | Review all six themes | Continue 多音字 daily; random topic each day | Review all vocab; practise the weakest themes |
| 5 | Rapid topic-switching | Pick a random theme — answer on the spot | Full timed mock oral (10 min prep + 10 min exam) |
Phase 3: Exam simulation — Weeks 4–1 (mid-July to August)
In the final four weeks the work is almost entirely simulation. Do not introduce new material. Recognise anxiety for what it is and protect the routine.
| Wk | Focus | Daily (10 min) | Weekend (15–20 min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Full mock orals, timed | 10-min prep → record full oral → review | Two full mock orals; identify weak spots |
| 3 | 你同意吗 questions | Practise taking stances on unfamiliar statements | Mock oral with a friend or tutor |
| 2 | Expression and delivery | Read aloud with exaggerated expression; review 多音字 | Final mock oral |
| 1 | Confidence + logistics | Light review only — do not cram new material | Prepare IC, entry proof, travel plan |
